THE FOUNDER OF MILITARY FREE FALL – THE AMAZING STORY OF JACQUES-ANDRÉ ISTEL

Today, Military Free Fall is utilized in special operation combat missions worldwide. But how did it get started and when? To establish this, we must start with the story of Jacques Andre Istel.

At age 91 years old, Mayor Jacques Andre Istel can be seen walking among the visitors in the small town of Felicity, California. There, he shares the history of the world which has and is being recorded in granite (Museum of History in Granite at the official “Center of the World.”)

The place is an amazing location to visit in the desert area of southeastern California just outside of Yuma, Arizona. Felicity was founded by Mayor Istel and named after his amazing wife Felicia. Here, visitors from around the world stand in a pyramid where a spot on the floor is marked as the the “Center of the World” and receive a signed certificate to commemorate the occasion. The place is so unique that it is visited by dignitaries from around the world every year.

But, the founding of “Felicity,” the “Center of the World,” the “Hall of Fame of Parachuting,” and other significant accomplishments does not even touch the surface of who Jacques Andre Istel is. In this article, we highlight Jacques Andre Istel as the founder of Military Free Fall (HALO).

First, there are few people listed in the first few paragraphs of the United States Army Military Free Fall (MFF) manual. But, there he is, Jacques Andre Istel, being listed as a founding father. Few people know this, and perhaps this article will shed some light whereby special operators attending the MFF along with others may be motivated to meet this legend at Felicity.

Born in Paris, France in 1929, his mother and father were prominent people. In fact, his father represented the de Gaulle government at the Bretton Woods conference in 1944 (the conference established the International Monetary Fund). Having fled France to America to escape German occupation, Jacques attended Stony Brook and then Princeton University. Joining the United States Marine Corps, he commissioned as an officer and gained valuable experiences and contacts in the military ranks (he would later retire honorably at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel).

During this time, Jacques discovered parachuting and worked to make it a sport in America. He would establish the first sport parachute school and center (Orange Sport Parachuting Center.) which was the start of parachuting clubs and centers across the United States. He also established the regulations for parachuting with the Civil Aeronautics Administration, having testified to Congress. In 1956, Jacques led the first US Team to the World Championships that finally gained the attention of sport parachuting.

During these early days, parachuting was deemed hazardous by the military with MFF out of the question. As Jacques developed a safe parachute system, he conducted demonstrations to prove MFF was safe and beneficial to the military for stealth insertions. He also recommended to the Marine Corps the parachute insertion techniques for reconnaissance called “HALO” or “High Altitude, Low Opening.”

In 1957, his influence would finally result in the first MFF (HALO) class to whom he trained under contract by his company, Parachutes, Inc. (partnered with Lee Sanborn). His students were also the first Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights. Jacques’ last jump was in 1972.

Since 1985, he has been leading his vision for Felicity, recording history. If you get a chance, stop by and say “hi” to this legend.

New Book: Yuma Proving Ground

Arcadia Publishing

On February 17, 2020, Arcadia Publishing is releasing the new book on the history of the United States Army’s Yuma Proving Ground.

The Yuma Proving Ground’s early history began in 1849 with the establishment of Army outposts in the region. When the United States entered World War II in 1942, the Army established a large-scale training center that expanded from eastern California into western Arizona. Gen. George S. Patton Jr. was assigned to develop the Desert Training Center as a location to train personnel and test equipment in the harsh desert for the war effort. As part of the Desert Training Center, Camp Laguna and the Yuma Test Branch were founded to conduct specific training and testing in support of the war effort. In 1951, the Yuma Test Branch was renamed the Yuma Test Station, and by 1957, the Army began training personnel on military freefall. In 1963, the Army renamed the Yuma Test Station as the Yuma Proving Ground. Today, the Yuma Proving Ground stands near the original sites with the continued task of testing equipment and training personnel.

The Laverty Family History

I am excited on a new book, The Laverty Family History, that just published and is available at most book stores. Unlike the other two books I authored, this one relates to my heritage and those of more than 5,000 others! Here is some info about the book:

The Laverty's migration from Ireland to Oklahoma is a collection of historical narratives that has captured some of the Laverty family’s events, struggles, losses, failures, successes and memories. It is a compilation of previous works, with some research into the genealogy of the family. The story starts with the early beginnings of the family name. It then reviews the early social climate of Ireland into the 1700s where the story starts with John Laverty's two sons; Alexander and William Laverty. The two brothers decide to migrate to the new colonies of America where they start a new journey around 1740. From there, one brother goes to Florida and the other brother (Alexander) remains in the New York/Pennsylvania area. The son of Alexander, Henry Laverty, would eventually migrate to Michigan with his brothers. From Michigan, the son of Henry, William Laverty, would move to Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Kansas before settling in Oklahoma. Today, the Laverty families are spread across North America, with history of their journey slowly being lost. This book attempts to record some of that history.

United States Army National Guard Officer Candidate School: Tips for success

The purpose of this blog is to announce and discuss my new book, United States Amy National Guard Officer Candidate School:  Tips for Success.

This book was published with Amazon as a means to save readers money as it can be purchased in various forms starting at around $9.00.

The book contains information researched by former staff officers of the Officer Candidate School (OCS) and summarized or explained in the book so that the reader can have a better understanding of OCS.

The authors plan to have the book passed onto another OCS commander in the coming years for editing to ensure the book holds information valued by the reader.

The construct of the book was a result of the staff in 2012 to identify and reduce OCS candidate failures.  It is believed that the majority of OCS candidate failures are a result of a miscalculated understanding of OCS expectations and preparation.

It is our hope that those who purchase this book gain a better understanding and increase their chances for success at OCS.

You are invited to visit our Facebook Page, ANG OCS, to interact with other former candidates and staff to further develop.

Finally, any errors that need to be corrected or information that can be added to the book, please let us know by posting at one of our sites.

We wish all those who endeavor to enter OCS great success with the focus on making our World, Country, and Army a better place through courageous and excellent leadership!
